What You Need About CBD Products For Your Furry Friend

There are plenty of documented cases where CBD has helped various ailments in pets. However, for the longest time, the industry could not overcome the legal hurdles, as well as the social stigma associated with hemp.

But that changed with the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, which allowed the cultivation of industrial hemp. The raw material has resulted in a wide array of CBD products for pets available in the market today.

When the government moved to decriminalize hemp, it opened the floodgates for the industry. For instance, according to this report, the US CBD market will be worth $24 billion by 2023. About $1.6 billion of the total will be for products dedicated to pets.

Also, people are now more educated about hemp and how it is different from marijuana. The absence of THC, the psychoactive substance present in cannabis, makes CBD the ideal panacea for several conditions not just in humans but also in pets.

Are CBD Products for Pets Safe?

The short answer is yes. As already mentioned, hemp-based products do not contain THC and are non-toxic.

Here are some of the studies that prove the efficacy of CBD products for pets:

  1. A 2018 research concluded that CBD oil is an effective treatment method to reduce the pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis in dogs. The researchers also found no ill side-effects.
  1. A 2019 research revealed that dogs that were given with CBD oil experienced 33% less frequencies of seizure compared to the other test subjects. The researchers recommended that more studies should be made to explore the initial results.

However, veterinarians are not inclined to recommend CBD oil for suffering pets because of the policy of the industry association. The reason is that the Food and Drug Administration has not labeled any CBD oil products, not because they are unsafe, but due to the dearth of extensive research. As such, they could lose their license for doing so.

With that said, the State of California is paving the way to bring the issue to the surface. The bill, AB-2215, seeks to avoid sanctioning veterinarians if they discuss CBD treatment with the pet owners.

This initiative should bear monitoring, as the other states could follow suit. With government imprimatur, the association of veterinarians is likely to change its tone.

For instance, more than 6 in 10 veterinarians surveyed by the Veterinary Information Network claimed that they answer questions about CBD treatment from their clients at least once monthly.

What is the Right Dose to Give Your Pet?

If you can’t go to the veterinarian who will answer the right CBD dose to give your pet, how can you guarantee it is 100% safe?

Fortunately, there is a rich resource online of testimonies from pet owners who have been in your shoes.

It is recommended that you give from 1 mg to 5 mg for every 10 pounds of body weight for your dog or cat. You can administer the liquid directly into their mouth or on their food. It is best if you start at the lowest number then scale up the dosage until you hit the sweet spot. For instance, you begin giving your pet 1 mg for every 10 pounds of body weight. You can increase it to 3 mg/10 pounds and then 5 mg/10 pounds.

You give CBD oil to your dog or cat once or twice daily. Even if you think they are in great pain, you should always err on the side of caution, especially if it is your first time.
