There are hundreds of 2017 Holiday Gift Guides for pets scattered across the Internet. Many of them are helpful, others not so much. I’ve been reading those gift guides for pets and taken notes (I’ll be shopping for Soldier and Peanut Butter soon). I’ve visited countless stores and talked to manufacturers and pet experts, including dog groomers, pet behaviorists and veterinarians.

Dog proofing your house is a must when you’re bringing any animal into your home in order to protect them from potential hazards, but it is particularly important if you have a senior pet. Senior dogs may have difficulty seeing, mobility issues such as weak hind legs and other problems that need to be addressed when you pet proof your house.

There are tens of thousands of senior dogs in shelters across the U.S. and around the world, with many of them being euthanized after languishing for months and even years without being adopted. Most people looking for a family pet or companion animal come looking for a puppy or a young dog that they can make their own. These people are passing up senior dogs because they fear that older dogs will be difficult to train or that an older dog will be expensive and die too soon.

A personal observation today. As pet owners, we all love whatever kind of animal we own, but we must keep in mind that pets age far faster than humans do, with some pets’ lives dramatically shorter than ours. We have to treat these senior pets accordingly. This hit home with me this week because I had to take our cat, Peanut Butter, to the vet because she’s been acting strangely.
